Bishop and First Lady Thomas
When my husband and I were yet newlyweds, he would always tell me about the revivals taking place in New Jersey and New York. He would then ask me, “What nights do you want to go?” Dear reader, we were still getting to know each other. One time he said, “One of your homeboys is at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark this week, what night do you want to go?” That was how I heard one of the shift changing sermons that remains one of my all-time favorite sermons, from one of my all-time favorite people, Bishop Walter Scott Thomas.
Bishop Thomas preached a sermon about Job, Standing in for God. He preached about the goodness of Job juxtaposed by the adversity visited on his life. He preached about Job in the ring and taking the punches thrown at him. He preached that Job represented God, not his troubles and sometimes we are God’s only representative in the crosshairs that vex us. Bishop Thomas preached that instead of questioning, Why?, we have to turn why around and say Your Holy Will.
My husband and I could not have anticipated all of the challenges ahead for us, but that night the Bishop delivered a message that in a spiritual way foretold, prepped and bolstered us for our journey.
This is only one of the many reasons why on this day I, along with thousands of others, salute Bishop Thomas and First Lady Patricia Thomas on 40 years of pastoral ministry at the New Psalmist Baptist Church. May the Good Lord continue to Bless this ministry.
